A Few Things to Know, Before You Start...

• U.S. citizens are now required to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to the United Kingdom for short stays. This rule applies even if you are visiting for tourism, business, transit, or family visits. 

• Without an approved ETA, airlines may refuse boarding, and you may be denied entry upon arrival.

• Once approved, the ETA is sent electronically and must be printed and presented upon arrival.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital travel permit that allows eligible travelers to enter the United Kingdom without a traditional visa for short stays.

It is:

• Linked electronically to your passport

• Required before boarding your flight

• Not a visa, but still mandatory permission to travel

• Valid for multiple trips to the UK

• Usually valid for up to 2 years or until passport expires

• Allows stays of up to 6 months per visit

• Required for tourism, business trips, and short visits

• Must be approved before travel (not on arrival)

Who Needs a UK ETA?

Most visa-exempt travelers must apply for an ETA, including:

• United States citizens

• Canadian citizens

• EU/EEA nationals (in most cases)

• Other visa-waiver countries

Each traveler must have their own ETA, including children.

What You Can Do with a UK ETA?

With a valid ETA, U.S. citizens can:

• Visit the UK for tourism or holidays

• Attend business meetings or conferences

• Visit family and friends

• Transit through UK airports (if passing border control)

• The ETA does not guarantee entry—border officers make the final decision

• You must travel with the same passport used for the ETA application

• Airlines may deny boarding without a valid ETA
